Indicators of Schoolwide Social Emotional Learning

Indicators of Schoolwide SEL is evidenced by indicators of high-quality implementation in the classroom, school, family, and community. When implemented systemically, schoolwide SEL integrates academic, social, and emotional learning across classrooms, school, homes and community.

The School Guide identifies four focus areas for high-quality, systemic SEL implementation:

  • Build foundational support and plan
  • Strengthen adult SEL competencies and capacity
  • Promote SEL for students
  • Practice continuous improvement

Social Emotional Learning: Current Research

CASEL is committed to advancing quality SEL nationwide through a deep and ongoing commitment to shared knowledge-building. Through scholarship and key initiatives, CASEL creates, tests, measures, and refines practical approaches for addressing the field’s most challenging issues, including equity and SEL, adult SEL, and SEL and academic integration.

Reunite, Renew, and Thrive: (SEL) Roadmap for Reopening School

Educators across the country are grappling with an unprecedented set of circumstances as they prepare to welcome students and adults back to school. We face the layered impact of schools closures (e.g., loss of school-based relationships, routines, and learning); COVID-19 (e.g., on health, isolation, stress, and trauma); economic crisis (e.g., unemployment, impact on school budgets), and persistent, pernicious racial inequities exacerbated by the pandemic and amplified by the nationwide mobilization for racial justice reflected in the Black Lives Matter movement.

Resources for Collaborating States Initiative (CSI)

Links to numerous resources. They include a variety of tools and reports from CASEL and other national organizations, as well as many examples from states themselves. Our resources are organized by the four focal areas in the emerging state theory of action, which is aligned to CASEL’s district and school theories of action: planning, adult SEL, student SEL, and continuous improvement. Each focal area is further divided into specific tasks.

Measuring Social Emotional learning

The Assessment Guide provides several resources for practitioners to select and use measures of student SEL, including guidance on how to select an assessment and use student SEL data, a catalog of SEL assessments equipped with filters and bookmarking, and real-world accounts of how practitioners are using SEL assessments.
